Safety / EHS for Heavy Civil / Heavy Highway

Our client, a Heavy Civil Construction client that specializes in Roads & Bridges, is looking for a Safety/EHS position for the Brooklyn, NY area.

This is a full-time perm position.

Pro-actively drives and enforces the principles of creating a safe and healthy work environment. Responsible for administration of company environmental, health & safety (EHS) programs nationally including publishing and updating policies and procedures, jobsite safety compliance, safety incentive programs, and monitoring/reporting of safety performance data.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Ensure that environmental, health & safety (EHS) teams for each project are adequately resourced with capable personnel.
  • Ensure that business leaders understand and have clear EHS roles and responsibilities and that they are aware of all significant risks, incidents and non-conformances and that management implement effective reviews, mitigation plans and analysis to effectively close out and prevent similar incidents.
  • Provide accurate and timely reports to the Executive Team.
  • Ensure that safety personnel have adequate training available to perform their duties/responsibilities.
  • Facilitate the ongoing simplification of existing EHS processes and documentation and ensure sufficient training is made available.
  • Be part of the investigation team on any fatal incident and ensure on all fatal or “Near Fatal” incidents that lessons learned and appropriate corrective actions are applied across the business.
  • Ensure that a safety strategy is applied to all new pursuits and investments and that an EHS risk assessment is completed for each prior to commencement.
  • Ensure that EHS roles and responsibilities are read, understood and applied.
  • Commit to undertake relevant training to assist in improving personal EHS understanding and performance.
  • Commit to speak up when any unsafe actions witnessed.
  • Commit to reading (and taking action where appropriate) any EHS correspondence or alerts.
  • Commit to undertaking in a review, at least annually, of performance against EHS roles & responsibilities.
  • Provide annual EHS performance evaluations for all direct reports in the United States and set performance targets or goals for the EHS team.
  • Actively participate with insurance consultants, OSHA, and industry organizations with the interest of sharing and learning world class methods to achieve best practices.

 

 

  • 4-year degree in Health & Safety field preferably and or CSP/CIH
  • Minimum 10 years Health & Safety experience/knowledge. Heavy civil engineering background a plus
  • Experience with MSHA and CAL OSHA is a plus
  • Knowledge of construction methods and practices; federal, state, and local law and regulation; and corporate policies and procedures
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills are required
  • Ability to understand, analyze and clearly communicate complex technical and safety management information to a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to continually foster and lead safety culture on a national level, inspiring individuals and their behavior
  • Knowledge and experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Polished and effective presenter and communicator, capable of interacting with senior level executives
  • Strong analytic, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Travel required up to 40%
